What is Instant Messaging (IM) ?

Instant Messaging (IM) - Real-time communications service that notifies a user when people are online and then allows the user to exchange messages or files with them or join a private chat room. Many IM services also can alert you to information such as calendar appointments, weather, stock quotes or sport scores.

How does it work?
1. Login to the IM server
2. server checks if any established friends, family or co-workers, called buddies are online.
3. Send instant messages to online buddy
4. instant message travels through messaging server and then to online buddy
