Introduction to the Internet & World Wide Web (2)

Ways to access the Internet

Internet Service Providers (ISP)– a business that has a permanent Internet connection and offers temporary internet connections to individuals and companies free or for a fee.

1. Regional ISP – ISP that provides access to the Internet through one or more telephone numbers local to a specific  geographic area.

2. National ISP – Type of ISP that provides access to the Internet through local telephone numbers in major cities and towns nationwide and usually offer more services and generally have a larger technical support staff than regional ISPs.

3. Online Service providers (OSP) – Business that provides access to the Internet, as well as members-only features that offer a variety of special content and services.

4. Wireless Service provider (WSP) – Company that provides wireless internet access to users with wireless modems or web- enabled handheld computers or devices.

How Data travels the Internet Using a telephone Line Connection

1. You initiate an action to request data from the internet. For example, you request to display a web page on your computer screen.
2. A modem converts the digital signals from the computer into analog signals, which are carried by telephone lines.
3. Data (requested) travels through telephone lines to a local ISP.
4. Data may pass through one or more routers before reaching its final destination.
5. The regional uses lines, leased from a telephone company to send data to a national ISP.
6. A national ISP routes data across the country to another national ISP.
7. Data moves from a national ISP to a local ISP and then to a destination server (in this example, the server that contains the requested web site).
8. The server retrieves the requested data (a web page) and sends it back through the Internet backbone to your computer.

Internet Addresses:
Each computer on the Internet has a unique identification number call an IP (Internet Protocol) address.

IP Address - Number that uniquely identifies each computer or device connected to Internet.

DNS (domain name system) software- A program, which coordinates the IP addresses and domain names for all computers attached to it.

Domain name server - The host computer that runs this software.

IP address
first part identifies network -> 199.95.72.1 <- last part identifies specific computer

A domain name is a unique name associated with a specific IP address by a program that runs on an Internet host computer.

IP address       ---      199.95.72.1
Domain name  ---      scsite.com

Top-level domain (TLD)- contained in a program name, an abbreviation that identifies the type of organization associated with the domain.

Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is a four-part addressing scheme that tells the Web browser:
• The transfer protocol to use when transporting the file
• The domain name of the computer on which the file resides
• The pathname of the folder or directory on the computer on which the file resides
• The name of the file
